I currently serve as RN in the Pediatric Unit, where I am responsibilities for providing patient and family education and health counseling.  I teach patients and families how to handle ongoing and lifelong illnesses, including training newly diagnosed diabetics in handling each stage of the illness. I cover many topics in the education of a diagnosis, including signs, symptoms, medications, insulin injections, finger sticks, central line operations, asthma inhaler usage, and carbohydrate counting.  Diagnosis can be overwhelming to patients, so I make it a point to demonstrate the ease of treatment and manageability of condition to alleviate unnecessary fears. I follow up with a detailed evaluation of their learning to ensure complete understanding of patient treatment plan. I apply many diverse methods of education, based on patient/family learning needs; methods include verbal lectures, handouts, videos, and hands-on demonstrations.  I facilitate education from initial admission to discharge and follow-up.

My current position requires patient education and health counseling on a daily basis. I adapt my instructional methods based on family learning styles and educational levels.                I am skilled in coordinating the services of numerous healthcare agencies and personnel to ensure the highest quality patient care. I collaborate with the Hospitalists, Residents, Interns, Patient Care Technicians, Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists, Clinical Nurse Leader, and Support Staff in coordinating patient services. There have been occasions where overworked Interns and Residents overlooked the worsening symptoms of my patient; I addressed the issue, going to superiors when necessary, to ensure quality patient care. I have experience identifying and handling child abuse cases. An infant was brought in with obvious signs of physical and sexual abuse. I notified social services and police as required by law, while also overseeing the care of the patient and keeping the parents away from the infant. I have extensive experience dealing with irate parents, angry families, domestic violence between parents, and disputes between staff members.  I am skilled at handling upset parents whose child were taken away from them and placed in Child Protective Service custody.  Irate and abusive parents called frequently to harass the staff for removing their children from violent and dangerous situations. I collaborate with various medical departments and physicians, ensuring patient safety and protect during transfers to and from the unit.
