My involvement with the military and subsequently with the Veterans Administration medical area has been a constant factor throughout my life, starting in early childhood.  As the child of a soldier killed in Vietnam, our family interacted closely with the VA and after positions as Senior Pastor to two congregations, Executive Director of a homeless shelter, Chaplain for an emergency shelter, and Counselor at a home for abused youth, my current role is as Chaplain Resident for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Dayton , OH.  As Chaplain, I utilize my background of more than two decades of in-depth religious and spiritual study and service to others to provide counseling and spiritual support to Veterans in distress by utilizing, among other tools, empathetic listening and expressing understanding of their circumstances and needs.  Further, my formal training, education and long-term experience allow me to offer spiritual assessment of at-risk individuals whose religious/spiritual conflicts may have been a cause of interference with returning to health.

As a member of the Veterans patient care team, I regularly participate in care conferences, assessing patient spiritual status and adding my conclusions to the medical file.  I collaborate with other healthcare teams, assisting by providing spiritually-focused groups to participate in Dual Diagnosis, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Homeless, Poly-substance, Methadone and PTSD treatment programs.

To elaborate more fully on my formal educational background, I earned Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Ethics and Master of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.  During my doctorate studies, I worked closely under the tutelage of Dr. Paul Simmons, author of one of the first textbooks on Bioethics, who provided excellent insight into the blending of modern theology and the behavioral sciences and the use of that meld in dealing with complex human and societal conditions.

Following my Masters work, I served as a Behavioral Counselor in a home/shelter for troubled and at-risk adolescent girls who were victims of abuse.  Functioning as a group leader and role model, I assisted in providing understanding and care in a therapeutic, structured and residential environment.  As a part of this role, I worked closely with other members of the treatment team in assessing individuals and developing care plans to meet their emotional and physical needs and in general to assist them in becoming whole again.

My initial professional contact with homeless Veterans who suffered frequently from the dual difficulties of mental illness and substance abuse came when I accepted the position of Chaplain for the Wayside Christian Mission in Louisville, KY, where I directed a staff of 19 whose goal was to provide a civil, dignified and caring environment for homeless, chemically-dependent individuals to assist them in achieving and maintaining a sober lifestyle and return to society as self-sufficient individuals.

I continued to work with the homeless as Executive Director of the Jefferson Street Baptist Center, also in Louisville.  Here, I worked closely with the Baptist Church governing body in establishing a day shelter, a 30-bed transitional unit, and a Veterans-focused 12 low-income apartment complex, with all supporting services.

Additionally, I accepted a call to serve as Senior Pastor for two United Church of Christ congregations, leading worship services and participating in the various rituals of the Christian church including observing the Sabbath, administering Holy Sacraments, leading Bible study and celebrating important days and times of the Church calendar.
