KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs)

FACTOR A:  Please describe your experience and training related to the examining, handling, diagnosing, and treating of animals.

As demonstrated in my progressive career, I have continually acquired valuable experience and training in examining, handling, diagnosing, and treating of animals.

As an Equine Veterinarian at the Fox Run Equine Center, I independently performed surgical tasks, diagnosed cases and provided critical assistance.  I examined a broad range of medical issues, assessed surgical needs, performed surgery, monitored post-operative progress and promptly responded to medical emergencies.  Exhibiting strong technical skills, I proficiently utilized radiographic, ultra-sound, thermography, and scintigraphy technologies to effectively diagnose cases.

In addition, as a Horse Show Veterinarian, I also helped individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their animals health.  I handled, assessed and recorded symptoms, reactions and progress in horses.  In addition, I developed and directed care plans to successfully treat animals and instructed clients in proper care.

While working as an Exotic Animal Veterinarian, I provided healthcare for various types of animals.  I successfully diagnosed animal health problems, vaccinated against diseases and medicated animals suffering from infections or illnesses.  Demonstrating critical thinking and problem solving skills, I treated and dressed wounds and advised on animal feeding, behavior, and breeding.

To complement my professional experience, I completed a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and certified by the Veterinary National Boards and the Pennsylvania Veterinary Boards.  I have also completed numerous publications based on the examination, handling, diagnosis and treatment of animals.

FACTOR B:  I have performed the following work functions pertaining to livestock.  Blood specimen/tissue sample collection for pathology and laboratory testing purposes; Disease prevention, control, and eradication activities in the field; and Animal health regulatory inspections/enforcement.  Please provide examples of your work involving the functions selected above.

A key part of my jobs has been to perform a broad range of functions related to animals and livestock, including: Blood specimen/tissue sample collection for pathology and laboratory testing purposes; Disease prevention, control, and eradication activities in the field; and Animal health regulatory inspections/enforcement.

Serving as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and Post-Doctoral Graduate Research Associate, I acquired extensive experience with blood specimen/tissue sample collection for pathology and laboratory testing purposes.  I studied in vivo and in utero gene therapy research using retroviral vectors on murine and non-human primate models, in close collaboration with the research team.  I also proficiently prepared and analyzed samples and maintained test data according to guidelines, exhibiting organizational and analytical skills.  I monitored colleagues to ensure adherence to all standards, policies and procedures.  I conducted comprehensive review and analysis of the physiology and immunology of performance animals. Applying my strong research and analysis abilities, I independently planned, implemented, and generated scientific research data.  I also subsequently interpreted, published, and presented the results of these studies.

My solid background in veterinary work has included disease prevention, control, and eradication activities in the field.  As a Research Assistant Professor, Institute of Biodesign, Center for Infectious Diseases & Vaccinology at Arizona State University, I demonstrated a solid understanding of physiological practices and principles in proficiently leading and participating in vaccinology work for avian influenza virus and pathogenesis of influenza with 1918 pandemic virus, from concept through analysis.  I effectively led and collaborated on various funded research projects, including NIAID project studying Gene Expression Control by the 1918 Flu in Macaques, with direct annual costs of $101,950.

I have also contributed my expertise toward managing animal health regulatory inspections/enforcement.  As a Regulatory Compliance Consultant & Non-Human Primate Studies Consultant at Katze Laboratory, Dept of Microbiology/Washington National Primate Research Center, I applied my strong attention to detail toward ensuring critical compliance with all health regulatory inspections.   Also, while working as a Research Scientist (IV) & Post Doctoral Fellowship and Residency, Comparative Medicine and Microbiology at University of Washington Depts. of Comparative Medicine & Microbiology, I was appointed to lead influenza projects utilizing the macaque model, while ensuring critical regulatory compliance in connection with all projects.  While conducting clinical rotations to enhance experience in pathology and management of all common laboratory animal species, I also ensured critical compliance by carefully managing all regulatory applications (IACUC, EHS, and Occupational Health) for the laboratory in conjunction with these projects, further illustrating exceptional knowledge of health regulations.
