as a caring professional, offering a masters degree in special education, a bachelors degree in child study, and in-depth involvement and experience with general as well as special needs students in the critical early childhood through middle school ages, i believe i can bring to your district the type of focused developmental support our young people need and deserve.

 

over the past 12 years i have honed my teaching skills in a variety of teaching roles, from substitute teacher and tutor, to elementary & special education teacher, to my most recent three years as special education co-teacher, working daily with 13 individuals with varying learning disabilities, classified as well as 504.  in this capacity, i completed ieps, annual and triennial reviews and student classifying/declassifying.  additionally, i worked extremely closely with all parents involved, providing written as well as face-to-face communication, wiat & woodcock yearly testing and state-mandated testing, and i actively collaborated with the school psychologist, our departmental chair, and other colleagues in assuring the finest support possible for our youngsters.

 

prior to this position, i served as an elementary-grade-level teacher, placing particular emphasis on reading and writing intervention, assessment, curriculum enhancement and development of appropriate grade-level objectives.  this allowed me to provide small group as well as whole class instruction in a variety of programs.  during this time, i was chosen to participate in a one-year reading first initiative program and completed training in soar to success and phonographix, two remedial reading programs.  involvement in these initiatives provided me with tools to utilize in supporting my students development and growth. 

 

as a function of my commitment to excellence in education, particularly for those with special needs, i have been involved with numerous relevant organizations, participating as well as taking leadership roles in seminars and conferences to increase my teaching and interaction skill sets.  among these were serving as parent-child home teacher/co-coodinator, participating in the literacy across the content areas conference, performing grant writing activities (resulting in obtaining united way grant for early childhood program), and being a contributing member of the school strategic planning council, kindergarten screening committee, code of conduct committee, early childhood committee and the pta.

 

the philosophical point-of-view that i bring to my classroom and students is that individuality is to be highly prized and developed, and i have integrated this into my approach to meet the variety of needs of youngsters in my care and within my sphere of influence.  i have utilized research-based reading programs and special education teaching strategies to accommodate these needs.  and i have found my role as a teacher to be both joyful and rewarding.
